Davis is positively on point as an aging megastar that takes in a loving fan (Baxter) and eventually finds that the youthful lady is taking over her life. Cast includes Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Thelma Ritter, Marilyn Monroe, Hugh Marlowe, and Gregory Ratoff. (138 minutes, 1950)

Rent-a-Kid: While the head of an orphanage takes a holiday, dad Nielsen takes over with a plan to raise money by renting out kids. While unsurprising, this stupid premise is surprisingly effective. Eventually 3 youngsters are rented by a hip ’90s couple considering adopting. A respectable family flick. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Matt McCoy, Sherry Miller, and Amos Crawley. (89 minutes, 1995)

Marie Antoinette: Visually sumptuous account of an adolescent’s voyage from Vienna to the Palace at Versailles and the throne of France. Author-director Coppola’s Marie (as played by Dunst) is a modern-day gal, with contemporary music set contrary to the pomp and circumstance of the 18th century life. Starts to tire eventually and ends with a cry, not a smash although there’s much to like here. Cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Tear Tom, Steve Coogan, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, Molly Shannon, Shirley Henderson, Danny Huston, Marianne Faithfull, Mary Nighy, and Sarah Adler. Deep Red: There’s style to burn in pointless terror thriller with Hemmings on the trail of a sadistic psycho murderer. Showy, weird scenes set to beating rock soundtrack. Cast includes David Hemmings, Daria Nicolodi, Gabriele Lavia, Macha Meril, and Glauco Mauri. (98 minutes, 1975)

Play Time: Hulot (Tati) drifts through an unrecognizable modern Paris of steel and glass skyscrapers. Scene and noise gags abound in this superbly created film. These assorted effects are connected by Hulot’s attempt to keep a meeting. Cast includes Jacques Tali, Barbara Dennek, Jacqueline Lecomte, Valerie Camille, and Leon Doyen. (126 minutes, 1967)

Mark of the Vampire: This film is an admirable, fascinating story of vampires terrorizing European village. The film is beautifully finished, with a marvelous ending. Redo of Browning’s quiet London after Middle of the night. Cast includes Lionel Barrymore, Elizabeth Allan, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, Jean Hersholt, and Donald Meek. (61 minutes, 1935)

Macabre: Strange goings on in smaIl town where physician’s youthful daughter mysteriously disappears and a nameless telephone hailer declares that the kid has been buried alive. Cast includes William Prince, Jim Backus, Christine White, and Jacqueline Scott. (73 minutes, 1958)
