How to Write a Song
You need a special gift for a special person. Maybe you just feel good and you gotta say it so that others will feel good too. How can you say it in the best possible way?
Have you ever felt as if words just don’t cut it to express your feelings? Nothing can be more frustrating. When you need a way to connect, put it in a song. Lie down in a quiet place and bang it out. This one thing is all you need or care about right now. To keep things simple and focused, we are writing an upbeat song which goes best with a verse-chorus song structure.
Melody and Lyrics are the two components of a song.
1) The Melody – This is a natural thing The air around you sings with melodies. Catch one. Let your imagination snare one and dance with it.
- Begin with a few notes that reflect how you feel. Don’t try to force a melody, release it. The first notes lead to more which wants to complete the phrase. Play with a few modifying variations.
-Always record the best of your work as soon as it comes to you. This is important. If you don’t record it, you’ll be surprised how fast it disappears.
– Don’t worry about how little you know of music composition. You don’t have to know anything but what you like. You’ve listened to the best music all your life, that’s one of the great things about modern life, the best of the best are heard world wide because of the media, so you know what good music is and you have it ingrained in your soul.
2) The Lyrics – A song’s structure is set by the lyrics. We are writing a verse-chorus song because it matches a happy mood, its the most popular and also the simplest form. It’s also the easiest form to write for because it is the most natural one.
-The chorus should be written first. That is the main idea, the point, the focus of the song. This is the core of what you want to say, It’s important to use active descriptive, colorful verbs and specific descriptions, following the line and rhythm of the melody.
- The song’s title is ready made. Its the part of the song that stands out. It is usually the first word or words of the chorus because that is what people will remember. The chorus is the most memorable part of the song, it is repeated after each verse.
- The chorus is explained by the verses. Each verse explains the chorus a little more. The melody of the verse complements the melody of the chorus and the same goes for the lyric
-There is a big difference between a lyric and a poem, even though they resemble each other. A lyric should be direct, clear and to the point. Whether it rhymes or not is up to you but it should follow the rhythm of the music.
- Words and music in a song should fit together like Juliette and Romeo like a sword in the sheath, like the proverbial hand and glove, the closer you can make this happen, the better the song will be; a high note should have a key word so you’ll probably want the chorus to start on a high note.
Study the song Maxwell’s Silver Hammer by the Beatles. The happy, upbeat mood of this song has a weird effect when you realize the subject matter of the story about a boy serial killer. It makes for a fascinating study in contrasting effects. Notice how the “Bang Bang Maxwell’s Silver Hammer…” of the chorus is explained and elaborated by the verses which move through time and tell the story. This is a feature of the verse – chorus which also tends to tell a story through time instead of a single thought or feeling such as the AABA form gives (see the song “Yesterday” for example).
The chorus is as simple as can be and right to the point. You can do it too. You only have to try.
